My deejay debut occurs Wednesday, April Fools’ Night on KAFM Community Radio, Grand Junction. The ground under my feet begins to shake at 9 pm, Mountain Daylight Time, or 11 o’clock on the East Coast. That covers witching hours, when all us miscreant creatures wander the earth.

Now what makes it special? KAFM streams on the Worldwide Web, so anyone, anywhere can listen. Talk about penetration!

And what will I do with this precious amount of time? First, after a raucous sign-on song, I’ll explain the show’s format: I’m starting with an hour’s worth of Americana “new music.” Because lest you big-city folk think that’s all yeehaw territory, Colbert show bandleader Jon Batiste is included in the genre. And there’s a song titled “I Used to Be Cool” that sounds great!

After the requisite top-of-the-next-hour’s announcements, I begin with Lehigh Valley (PA) blues legend Bev Conklin, whose title track from her band’s new CD “Glass Half Full” deserves a bit of air-play. Oh yeah, after her song gets played, Organized Chaos goes into overdrive.

I open “Grandpa’s Vault” and offer some of its contents. Those goodies include a call for Native pride by the Grandmothers, so named because Frank Zappa left the Mothers of Invention. Jimmy Carl Black (“the Indian of the group”) sings lead. Some kick-ass blues are thrown in by Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth. How about 13-miinutes of an extended blues version of “Red House,” recorded live by Jimi Hendrix in 1969 San Diego?

There’s much more (got to include Angélique Kidjo), and I trust you will share my musical influences while listening on stereo headsets. That’s the way to go in these crazy times.

Yeah, it’s a good time to let the world go by. As far as my participation is concerned, to borrow a lyric from a learned poet, “The time to hesitate is through. No time to wallow in the mire.”
