Back on the Microphone Again

Another Wednesday night show coming up, and I’m still learning the ropes in the studio. I can’t be deterred, though, because I’ve got platters to spin.

On the New Music segment starting at 9 pm, I’ll introduce four talented bluegrass musician women who formed a band called Big Richard. Big Richard? Good heavens, their song takes apart the “Millionaire” class, and no one in current power is spared.

Also on the New Music playlist is Willie Nelson’s recently released song, “The Border,” that shines a searchlight at illegal immigrants attempting to cross the southern border. This music is coming from middle America, y’all!

One hour later, Grandpa’s Vault reminds me of a 1977 concert at the old Miami Baseball Stadium where Pink Floyd unveiled its Roger Waters-influenced album, “Animals,” in South Florida. A phalanx of Miami police stood outside in formation grimacing at the huge pink pig flying overhead; fortunately, the gendarmes’ commanders had enough sense not to harass the appreciative crowd inside. The tracks of that album are super-long, so none of them don’t get played much these days. Nevertheless, leave it to me to change that.

In addition, I have Bev Conklin’s version of Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” that’s so impressive you might not want it to end.

That’s just a sampling of the “Organized Chaos” scheduled for Wednesday night, May 13th, on kafmcommunityradio.org from 9 pm Mountain Daylight Time to midnight. Add or subtract those hours depending on your particular time zone. (It starts at 11 pm on the East Coast, and at 8 pm on the West Coast.)

Once again, it’s time to straighten up and fly right? Nah, Mason from Miami is gonna fly his 83-year-old freak flag for three more hours. See you there!

Another Opening, Another Show

Oh boy. Good words were said following my broadcast debut, so much so that I am approved for two more Wednesday night shows.

Nevertheless, I must settle down enough to remind everyone my first hour is filled with new music. Music has proven itself in the annals of world history to be constantly evolving. I love the old stuff that deservedly sees the light of day. But honorable intentions aside, the fervor of a new generation comprised of talented physically-fit musicians stir my wretched body.

And tonight, the moment is decreed. After 9 pm here (11 pm on the East Coast), I continue my exploration into “New Music.” For the time being, I favor “Americana,” because I can’t deny its instinctual expressions.

One hour later (midnight on the East Coast), Organized Chaos goes into overdrive once I open “Grandpa’s Vault.” That’s when the fun begins.

First off, I plan to make good on a gaffe from one of the station’s CD players. Janis Joplin’s “Ball and Chain” performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 was rudely interrupted. I owe you a repeat performance.

Next there’s a song I heard years ago by Jimi Hendrix called “Taking Care of No Business,” which depicts the life of a homeless person. Looking around cities nowadays, it sounds like he spoke from experience.

There’s also a duet from Bev Conklin and Wayne Smith on her CD “Glass Half Full.” It’s appropriate to honor their musical collaboration now in recognition of the blues concert on Black Saturday (the evening before Easter Sunday) at the Raven’s Nest in Pennsyltucky.

And what’s this? A little ditty by the Rainy Daze that seems not to be heard on radio anymore. Its title is “Acupulco Gold.” Remember?

There’s much more, so catch my show, same time, same station KAFMcommunityradio.org, 9 o’clock Mountain Time, 11 pm Eastern Time and I’ll send you Easterners off to dreamland just before 2 in the morning. That’s when Creator’s wild creatures lurk about.

Perhaps you will meet me there.

Free Ear Candy!

My deejay debut occurs Wednesday, April Fools’ Night on KAFM Community Radio, Grand Junction. The ground under my feet begins to shake at 9 pm, Mountain Daylight Time, or 11 o’clock on the East Coast. That covers witching hours, when all us miscreant creatures wander the earth.

Just enter the following address into your Internet browser: kafmcommunityradio.org.

Now what makes it special? KAFM streams on the Worldwide Web, so anyone, anywhere can listen. Talk about penetration!

And what will I do with this precious amount of time? First, after a raucous sign-on song, I’ll explain the show’s format: I’m starting with an hour’s worth of Americana “new music.” Because lest you big-city folk think that’s all yeehaw territory, Colbert show bandleader Jon Batiste is included in the genre. And there’s a song titled “I Used to Be Cool” that sounds great!

After the requisite top-of-the-next-hour’s announcements, I begin with Lehigh Valley (PA) blues legend Bev Conklin, whose title track from her band’s new CD “Glass Half Full” deserves a bit of air-play. Oh yeah, after her song gets played, Organized Chaos goes into overdrive.

I open “Grandpa’s Vault” and offer some of its contents. Those goodies include a call for Native pride by the Grandmothers, so named because Frank Zappa left the Mothers of Invention. Jimmy Carl Black (“the Indian of the group”) sings lead. Some kick-ass blues are thrown in by Tracy Nelson and Mother Earth. How about 13-miinutes of an extended blues version of “Red House,” recorded live by Jimi Hendrix in 1969 San Diego?

There’s much more (got to include Angélique Kidjo), and I trust you will share my musical influences while listening on stereo headsets. That’s the way to go in these crazy times.

Yeah, it’s a good time to let the world go by. As far as my participation is concerned, to borrow a lyric from a learned poet, “The time to hesitate is through. No time to wallow in the mire.”

See you in space!

p.s. I’m not listed for the station yet. I’m subbing for another DJ.
